‘Art in Flowers’ at Our April Tri-Club Meeting
On April 18, the three Quincy garden clubs of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts (Seaside Gardeners of Squantum, Houghs Neck Garden Club, and Wollaston Garden Club) met together at their annual “Tri-Meeting” hosted this year by the Wollaston Garden Club at Wollaston Congregational Church Social Hall. Special Guests included GCFM President, Heidi Kost-Gros and South Shore District Director Jean Berg. The presidents of each club made brief announcements about up-coming events.
Marisa McCoy a Master Flower Show School Judge and noted floral arranger, presented a wonderful program and demonstration on ‘Art in Flowers’. Marisa is a long-time MFA Associate in floral arranging and participates annually in the museum’s Art in Bloom. Marisa combined six works of art with original floral interpretations and designed floral arrangements to complement each art piece. McCoy stressed that the art work should be interpreted, not explained – she warned against being “too literal” in creating the floral piece. McCoy stressed that finding the relationship between color, texture and/or line in the art work should be the focus when creating an arrangement to interpret the art. As always the importance of the right container, perfect flowers, and good technique make for a success with “Art in Flowers’. McCoy is a wonderful teacher and everyone in the room benefited from her instruction.
Ruth Griffin, Special Project chairs, was our Tri-Mtg hostess and the Board (officers and committee chairs) of the Wollaston Garden Club served as members of the hostess committee -they presented this wonderful array of savory and sweet refreshments enjoyed by all. Mary Cassidy and Pamela Smith created the small arrangements of astromeria for the tables. All the floral arrangements were raffled off at the end of the meeting.
In April of 2013 the Houghs Neck Garden Club will host for the Tri-Club Meeting.
