January 2015 Meeting

Landscape designers Joan Butler and Jana Milbocker presented “The Garden in Winter at our January 15 meeting.  Joan and Jana are avid gardeners, plant collectors, garden designers and writers.  Their program consisted of a photography lecture with display and handouts highlighting 10 plants.  The garden can be a magical place, even in winter.  Stripped of summer foliage and flowers, the success of a winter garden lies in its structure, basic design and choice of plant material.  This richly illustrated lecture provided inspiration and tips on designing your garden for winter interest, choosing the best trees, shrubs and perennials and grouping them to create arresting vignettes.  Joan and Jana have a website and blog that members are encouraged to visit and sign up to receive periodic updates—

After a brief business meeting, attendees were treated to a delicious luncheon provided by Ann Carey and her assistants.  Barbara Linden provided a touch of spring with her yellow tulip buffet table arrangement, and floral arranging chair Mary Cassidy used mason jars to create arrangements for each of the tables.
As our horticulture display, members were asked to bring an amaryllis, orchid or other houseplant in bloom.  Although there weren’t a lot, those that were brought provided a bright spot on a rainy day.
