Garden Club Welcomes
Garden Author, Kerry Mendez,
For Program on
"Outrageous Foliage Plants"
The October 2012 evening meeting was an
exciting one with a Books in Bloom l exhibit, and a wonderful program of horticulture and landscape design with the nationally known garden author, consultant, designer, teacher, and lecturer from
upsate New York, Kerry Mendez.
The hostess for the wonderful refreshments was Faith Raimondi; while Pam Smith, created the beautiful large fall – inspired buffet table centerpiece. Pat Artis, Leah Shea and Mary Cassidy all exibited "books in bloom". The business meeting was conducted by President Jan Clifford who reported on the budget, board business, and various club projects, including: the red emperor tulip test-garden & daffodil project with four Quincy Schools; and the need for volunteer commitment for the up-coming Holiday Greens Sale on December 7th. Elaine McGrail gave a detailed report from the Conservation Committee; and signatures were collected in support of have the "Up-dated Bottle Bill" placed on the ballot in November 2014.
The real highlight of the October meeting was Kerry Mendez and her program about using color and texture in garden design through the use of wonderful foliage. Kerry stressed the importance of four season color and highlighted shrubs and hardy perennials, and even annuals, that create impact when used in garden design. Kerry passed out a list of hardy foliage plants, organized by color, and took us through a power point presentation detailing each plant chosen as one of her "favorites". We all learned so much about the characteristics and care of each plant. The meeting was concluded by a lively raffle filled with plants from the Arnold Arboretum Plant Give-Away, donations from Cochato Nurseries and from the WGC Narcissus Bulb Program.
