WGC: Monthly Meeting Minutes - February 20, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm. by Jan Clifford, President.

Jan C. thanked the hostess, Anne C. and her A-team of helpers: Barbara L., Marylynn S., Florence C., Ellie C., Mary B., Lisa T., Anita F., Linda B., Ann Marie B., Ann C., and Ruth D.

 

A big thank you went to Marcia S. for her lovely head table arrangement, and to Thelma R. and Mary C. for their creative and fun arrangements for the dining tables.  All the arrangements were included in the monthly raffle at the end of the meeting.

 

A motion was made to accept the January monthly minutes by Elaine McG. and seconded by Mary C.

 

The treasurer’s report was read by Jan C.:

 

There are flyers on the front table for the following two events:

 

Civic Development Workshop: March 27th, Jo C. will be speaking on how we worked with the city on the planters.

 

Marie-Francoise Deprez, an International Floral Designer, will hold a “Floral Fantasy” Wallack Lecture presentation at Regis College which is held every two years.  The arrangements will be raffled off.

 

One new member, John H., attended the meeting.  There were three guests.

Lisa T. has a new address.  Colleen put out an addendum with this information.

 

A number of events are taking place over the next month.  Sign up sheets are on the front table for:

 

Cultural Perfection Workshop on February 26th at Houghs Neck Community Center for anyone who wants to participate in the Boston Flower show.  Pat A. will speak about that and of course the flower show itself which will be held on March 12-16.  WGC will have a North Window exhibit.  Pat gave an update on the North Window, mentioning the workshop that had taken place in January and the one that will take place on February 26th at Manet Community Center, both afternoon and evening sessions to review which plants/terrariums would be used.  She also asked if you plan to participate as an individual in the Amateurs category to please send photos to Rebecca D.

 

There will be a Tri-Club meeting on April 2nd, sponsored by Houghs Neck Garden Club.  Please sign up now so we can give them an estimate of the number of people from our club that will attend.

 

April 5th: “In the Garden with Carol F., Master Gardener; new location - Jan C.’s house at 57 Shelton Road, Quincy.  We will be dividing perennials for the plant sale.  If the weather continues to be this cold, we will defer to the backup date at the end of April—we will know better at the March meeting.

 

Conservation committee project: Pat A. discussed the ongoing Town Brook project and the joint effort on the part of QEN and members of WGC Conservation committee to count smelts in the Brook for the next two months.  She is asking members to sign up.  There will be an information meeting at the library on February 26th to update residents and look for assistance.

 

The Nominating committee had a meeting to discuss nomination of new officers and committee chairpersons.  If anyone is interested in joining the Board as an officer, or would like to chair a committee, please contact Janet L., Susan L., or Marie Z.. Their contact information is in the yearbook.

 

Marnie D. will start accepting new membership applications at the next monthly meeting. So please bring your checkbook, or cash for the annual dues.

 

Anita F. introduced Russell Stafford who did a presentation on “Unusual Bulbs”.  Russell is a trained and experienced ecologist, horticulturist, botanist, and owner of Odyssey Bulbs.
