JANUARY 16, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm. by Jan Clifford, President presiding.

Jan C. thanked everyone for coming out on such a foggy night and with traffic problems.

She then thanked Diane H., the hostess, (for the first time). She did an excellent job. The hostess helpers were: Marnie D., Colleen L., Elaine McG., Janet L., Ruth G., Anita F., and Donna M.

Jan C. gave a big thank you to Jo C. for the beautiful floral creation on the main table. Jan C. mentioned Jo C. was nominated for the Quincy Sun’s Citizen of the Year award by Anneli J. for all of the Civic Beautification projects and work done in the city of Quincy.

Moment of Community: Valerie Stromberg’s mother, Natalie Johnson, passed away this week. Many of us, new and long term members, may not be aware that Mrs. Johnson was a former member of the WGC and a former president of the Germantown Garden Club.

Extra copies of the December 2013 monthly meeting minutes are on the front table for all members here tonight. A motion was made to accept the December monthly minutes as written by Elaine McG. and seconded by Kay B.

Two treasurer’s reports were read by Jan C.:Our profit for the green sale this year is more than 2012, and 2011. A big thank you to everyone who contributed, donated, or worked in any way on this great event!!

Many interesting events are forthcoming, especially the May 17, 2014 plant sale at the Wollaston Congregational Church from 10:00 am to Noon.

Our newest member, John Hayes, brings our membership total to 109. Lisa T. has a new address. Colleen will prepare Addendum labels to pass out at the next meeting with all updates.

There are flyers on the front table for the following two events:

A Midwinter Interlude, sponsored by GCFM, February 1st in Worcester. It really is not that far! A number of distinguished designers will provide arrangements and advice during the course of the afternoon. The floral designs will be raffled off as well as many other prizes.

Marie-Francoise Deprez, an International Floral Designer, will hold a “Floral Fantasy” presentation at Regis College. Seats are still available. The arrangements will be raffled off.

WGC NEWS

We have been accepted this year for the “Art in Bloom” show. Cynthia L. will be head designer and Ruth G. will be her assistant. It will be held at the MA in late April.

BOSTON FLOWER SHOW: there will be a presentation of “small bay window of northern exposure” plants.

An excellent program was held at the Houghs Neck Community Center on January 8th regarding what are the best plants for low to moderate light windows found in northern exposures. Another workshop is coming up to determine which plants will be used. There are space limitations, plus we must get them repotted and ready for the display; opportunities to offer your plants for the show are forthcoming. Please contact Rebecca D. for more information.

Anita F. introduced Liz Barbour, Creative Feast Cooking expert. She did a PowerPoint presentation on Gardening with Herbs and Cooking with herbs. She demonstrated two seasonal recipes and had a sample for all along with printed copies of her recipes.
