WGC Monthly Meeting Minutes – March 20, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm; Jan Clifford, President presided.

Jan C. thanked the hostess, Lois R., and her team of helpers, for the great refreshments: Anne Marie B., Marie Z., Krisanne G. and Jackie R.

A special thank you went to Alison M. for her beautiful spring floral arrangement in a lovely pottery bowl. Included in the raffle, along with the buffet arrangement, was a pair of tickets to one of the GCFM’s most exciting events, “Floral Fantasy” with designer Marie Francoise Desprez on May 21, 2014 at Regis College.

A motion was made by Anita F. to accept the minutes of the February Monthly Meeting, and seconded by Elaine McG.

The Treasurer’s report was read by Jan C.

There are many events taking place over the next few months, and signup sheets are on the front table.

  1. Tri-Club Meeting on April 2nd by the Hough Neck Garden Club.

Thirty-five members have signed up.  Tonight is the last night to sign up.

  1. Presidents’ Tea will be held on April 17th.  This has not been held for several years.  A Presidents’ Tea is held by the clubs in the district every few years and a Club President and her guest is invited.  There are 33 clubs in the South Shore district. Between the clubs who accept and our own club members, we anticipate about 100 people will attend. Jan C. will send out an email to try to get those who aren’t here tonight to sign up, as we need an accurate count.  The program will be floral design with two well-known floral arrangers.

Jan C. announced a change of date---the program, planned by Carol Fischer, entitled “In the Garden” scheduled for Saturday, April 5, and has been rescheduled to April 19th because of the extreme cold weather. The backup date remains the same, April 26th.

There is a workshop coming up on April 9th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Houghs Neck Community Center, entitled “Creating Miniature and Small Designs”.  A signup sheet is on the table for those who plan to attend.  We ask they pay their $5.00 fee tonight so that we can purchase the appropriate materials for the workshop.  Mary C. has made a mini arrangement for reference, and has also put out some containers of the size that would work well.  There also is a “Books in Bloom” arrangement done by Mary –“A Long Way From Chicago” is the title of the book.

Marnie D. brought membership renewal applications for you to renew your membership tonight, or pick up an application to take home with you to complete and mail it back to Marnie D. We appreciate your getting the dues to us as early as possible.

WGC is participating again in Art in Bloom at the MFA. Cynthia L. is the designer and Ruth G. is her assistant. The art piece assigned is an ornate piece of furniture, a dresser of sorts from the European collection.

Jan C. asked the group to browse the tables of “Indoor Yard Sale items” and make us an offer; no reasonable offer will be reused.  We also have our famous gloves for $5.00 per pair, and “oasis” for $1.00 per block.

We are still looking for some committee chairpersons, and a second vice president for next year’s slate.  Please consider becoming a board member and/or chairperson on a committee.  Contact Janet L., Susan L., or Marie Z. if you are ready to have a fun filled year.

Committee Updates:

Pat A. gave an update on the status of the smelt count at Town Brook.  A number of people have signed up to monitor; the water is still too cold for the smelts. Pat also discussed the Boston Flower Show and our Northern exposure window.  The club won a yellow ribbon, which is a great accomplishment, but hasn’t received any scoring feedback. There were commendations by the judges on two plants donated by Carol F, and one by Ruth G.  In the amateur growers’ area, both Pat A. and Kathy C. won awards.

After a short break, Anita F. introduced the speaker, Cheryl Monroe, Master Gardener, educator, and specialist in clematis and garden design. Her presentation was beautiful and very interesting.

The meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm.

Janet Lynch, Recording Secretary
